There is only so much to go around.
Is it possible, in our consumer culture, to really want less, to desire less, to overcome our craving for material things?
What are the natural limits to consumption, given finite resources and burgeoning population growth?
Is it possible to develop an environmental ethic that permits material comfort, yet satisfies the social imperative to preserve and protect our fragile surroundings?
Can we afford to continue seeing nature’s value only in instrumental terms?
We will examine these questions as a basis for postulating a realistic ethics of consumption.
